11 February 1990.

I still remember that Sunday as if it was yesterday, not because I was celebrating history in the making, since I had no clue who Nelson Mandela was, and nor because I knew it would become the single most significant event of the start of the 90s.

But merely, because I was a simple nine-year-old white girl, in the prime of my childhood, making some of my best memories.

Gullible and clueless is how I see myself when I replay that day, sweet and innocent sounds better though!

To add clarity: I never knew a thing about apartheid, never knew the word, never heard that word, never realized about it at all until Mr. Mandela was due to become the next President of the Republic of South Africa.

It might sound strange to believe considering how advanced some nine-year-olds are today and I do try to think of why I never realized what the separation between blacks and whites really meant back then.

But the truth is: if your world is happy as a child and you don’t directly see any anger/hate/sadness around you, why would you question anything?
